Alexander Kennedy was the founder and namesake of Port Kennedy, purchasing the property from Mordecai Moore who died in 1803. Mr. Kennedy lived there from 1805 until his death in 1824, and he was buried at the Great Valley Presbyterian Church. By 1858, Port Kennedy included 1 hotel, 2 stores, a furnace, church, schoolhouse, blacksmith and wheelwright shop and 42 houses. The 1850 census reported 449 inhabitants and 516 residents were included in the 1870 census. The hotel, which was the only one in the area, was a large 3 story stone building elevated on the river bank. The Reading Railroad had a station nearby. Mr. Kennedy’s residence, known as the Kennedy-Suplee Mansion, now sits abandoned at the edge of Valley Forge Park awaiting its fate.
