On May 5, 1972, the first of three unit trains of modular homes left Abrams yard in route to Indianapolis as part of HUD’s “Operation Breakthrough,” while two other trains headed to Seattle. GE’s research lab participated in the large-scale systematic housing demonstration program which featured innovative house designs and site plans.
