PROGRAM Upper Merion’s Ethnic Heritage
SPEAKER Marianne Hooper Furman
We all grew up hearing about America being a “melting pot,” or you may have heard the more recent term “salad bowl.” Each and every one can claim a heritage that we trace to the Swedes, English, Irish, Italians, Polish, Slovak, Chinese, Korean, Asian Indian to name a few – and we are often likely to be an ethnic stew of any number of these. Where did the people who have made Upper Merion what it is today come from? And why? Join us as we take a look at the changing demographics as Upper Merion grew from 32 families in 1732 to a bustling “edge city” of almost 30,000 today.
