Please join the King of Prussia Historical Society at 2:00 pm on Saturday, March 10, at Christ Church (Old Swedes) when historian, demonstrator, interpreter and teacher, Clarissa F. Dillon, Ph.D., presents “Distilling as Women’s Work.” Clarissa brings wide-ranging research, hands-on experience, and careful documentation into her presentations on 18th-century housewifery.
Clarissa will talk about the process of making distillations used in the 18th century. There are two possible products from the process of distilling. It depends on the liquid put into the still: water in, water out or alcohol in, alcohol out. Colonial housewives were very familiar with both processes. Those with stills produced medicinals, cosmetics and various household preparations.
Clarissa is a founding member of Past Masters in Early American Domestic Arts, an organization dedicated to bringing the public to a better understanding of the century. Past Masters, in operation from 1986 through 2012, authored a widely-read informative and entertaining quarterly newsletter throughout its existence, and a cookbook that aids both novice and veteran historic cooks.
