On January 11, 1993, Upper Merion became the first police department in Pennsylvania with the ability to access records in Harrisburg from computers in its patrol cars. Few police departments had the equipment because it was expensive. It cost Upper Merion $150,000 to install the computers in eleven of its patrol cars.
