The Chester Valley Railroad was finished in 1853. It extended the entire 4 mile width of Upper Merion from east to west, with stations at Maple, King of Prussia, Henderson, and Shainline. It began at Bridgeport and connected with the PA Railroad at Downingtown. There were at least seven short branches erected by private enterprise, leading from mines and quarries
Ms. Holstein, (Upper Merion’s unsung hero) served as an army nurse during the Civil War and wrote about her experiences in her book, Three Years in Field Hospitals of the Army of the Potomac. Anna was also a successful fundraiser and her efforts helped purchase Washington’s Headquarters as a memorial. The Holstein home still stands just south of DeKalb Pike
On March 10, 1778, Alexander Hamilton and commissioners from the Continental and British Armies met at the King of Prussia Tavern to discuss the exchange of prisoners…but no agreement was reached. The Post Office was established as Reesville, Montgomery County on January 18, 1820. The name was changed to Upper Merion on February 28, 1829, and changed again to King of Prussia on April 5, 1837. It’s the only post office with this name in the world! There has never been an incorporated City of King of Prussia; the official name
