Built in 1690, the Hampton house was part of an active farm, well into the late 1950’s. One of the decedents, John Hampton, was a member of the board of supervisors in the late 1870’s. The Moore-Irwin House, located at 700 Moore Rd., served as quarters for General Muhlenberg during the 1777-78 encampment at Valley Forge. The 4.80 acres of the Irwin Estate’s historic three-story building, arboretum, cabin, and natural area was the former location of the Upper Merion Community and Cultural Center. Records kept by the Holstein family, early Upper Merion Swedish settlers, state that the Swedes, and in later years, the Germans and Swedes welcomed in the New Year with mumming. On October 23, 1969, Lafayette Ambulance dedicated its new headquarters located on North Henderson Road. The new building had a two-car garage and, due to the growth of Upper Merion Township, the decision to purchase a second ambulance was made.
