In 1848, Jonathan Roberts, farmer and U.S. Senator, built a school to educate the poor children from the mill workers’ houses on Croton Road, and for the pupils from the Henderson, Hughes, and Roberts farms. A ten acre site was set aside and the first school was built mostly from logs, lasting for 50 years. It was abandoned in 1917,
Stewart Fund Hall was a prominent building in Upper Merion history. It was erected in 1810 on the NE corner of Rt 202 and Allendale Road. On June 29, 1899, the 13th annual commencement for 8 of the Upper Merion Public Schools was held at Stewart Fund Hall. The graduating class consisted of 6 pupils, 2 boys and 6 girls. In 1785, three inns, four grist mills, three sawmills, one forge, and a fulling-mill existed in Upper Merion. There were three churches, one Episcopal, a Presbyterian, and a Christian Baptist, besides a Union Chapel.
