The Port Kennedy Bridge Company, with the assistance of Mr. John Kennedy, was incorporated by an act of Assembly passed on March 9, 1846. The company built a covered frame bridge, resting on three stone piers and of sufficient width to allow two wagons to pass. It was not completed till the close of 1849. In 1836, two years after the Common School Law was passed by the Commonwealth, Upper Merion Township had seven schools, seven male teachers, and 173 male and 112 female students. The UMT Police Department was established following the April 9, 1929 robbery-murder of a grocery store owner in Swedesburg. The crime was never solved and led to the denunciation of township officials by the Swedesburg residents. At the time, Swedesburg was the most heavily populated area in UM. The township was policed by two constables with assistance from the Bridgeport
Many of the early settlers and descendants of UM made their mark and moved. Some family names may only be known by the streets named after them such as Rambo, Holstein, Brooks, Henderson, Abrams, Allen, Pawling, Dewitt, Beidler, Coates, Walker, Pugh, DeHaven, Supplee, Roberts and others.
