Blaine W. Scott III, 92, died Saturday, April 18, 2020. He was born in Philadelphia, attended Friends Central High School, went on to serve in the United States Armed Forces for over 9 years and had an impressive career as the CEO of an insurance company.
Mr. Scott was a member of the Upper Merion Board of Supervisors from 1960-1966 and chairman from 1961-1966.
May he rest in peace.
In a previous history fact we had this to say about Mr. Scott:
During the Bicentennial of the United States in 1976, King Carl Gustaf XVI of Sweden did not wish to visit Upper Merion Township. The reason began in 1966.
That year the Upper Merion Township Supervisors, except Blaine W. Scott III, voted to eliminate the name of “Swedesford” from Route 202 and rename it DeKalb Pike, because the road is a continuation from Bridgeport and Norristown.
In 1969 the Philadelphia Inquirer reported on Mr. Scott’s opposition to the township’s mercantile tax in this article: “Blaine Scott, a King of Prussia businessman and former Upper Merion supervisor, has attacked the township’s proposed mercantile tax as ‘discriminatory and unneeded.'”
