After years of planning, on Sunday, August 20, 2000, the King of Prussia Inn was moved from it’s original location at the intersection of US Route 202 and Gulph Road to Bill Smith Boulevard on land donated by PECO Energy Company.
That planning included several archeological investigations conducted by PennDOT between 1991 and 2000. A number of features and artifacts linked to different periods in the inn’s history were discovered.
You can read all about these findings from the Rees and Elliot households, ca. 1775-1860; the rubbish behind the wagon shed from the Hoy occupation, 1871-1906; and the archeology of the vernacular colonial revival of Anna Heist, 1920-1952 at the National Parks Service’s “Archeology at the King of Prussia Inn” page. Even more information about the Inn can be found on the NPS’s Teaching with Historic Places Lessons Plans entry, At a Crossroads: The King of Prussia Inn.
Before you ask, since the inn is under the stewardship of the Montgomery County Chamber of Commerce, you will need to contact the chamber directly at 610-265-1776 to arrange a visit.
